Nickname Finder and free name generators for every kind of name

I built 22 tools to help you find a nickname, username, gamertag, team name, brand name and more. Pick the one that matches what you're naming, and copy a result in one tap.

What is a nickname finder, and what else can I find here?

A nickname finder turns a name, a hobby or an inside joke into short names people can actually use. Nicknames, short forms, pet names, usernames and gamertags are close cousins. They all aim to be easy to say, quick to type and personal. I built one tool for each job so you land on the right page fast and don't wade through options you don't need.

Each page explains how its results are built, what the tool can't tell you and how I'd pick a winner. If you're not sure where to start, the table below matches what you need to a tool.

Naming terms I use on this site

These words show up across my tools, so here is what I mean by each.

Nickname
An informal name used beside or instead of a given name, such as a short form, pet name or trait name.
Username and handle
The unique identifier you use to sign in or be found on an app. A handle is the public version, often shown after an @ sign.
Display name
The friendlier name other people see. It does not have to be unique.
Gamertag
A player's public name in online games and on consoles, shaped by each platform's rules.
Clan tag
A short abbreviation shown beside a player's name to show which group they belong to.
Portmanteau
A word made by blending the sounds and meanings of two others. My name mixer and combiners build these.
Hypocorism
The linguistic term for a short or pet form of a name, such as a clipped version or one with a friendly ending.
Kanji and romaji
Kanji are the characters used to write Japanese names. Romaji is the same name in Latin letters.
Unicode symbol
A decorative character, such as a star or crown, that you can paste into a name where an app allows it.

How I build the results

Every tool combines what you type with short word lists and simple naming rules, such as joining the front of one name to the back of another. Then I filter out results that are too short, too long or hard to say, and I sort the best first. You can narrow a list by length or first letter, and Remix builds a new set from any result you like.

What I don't do matters just as much. I don't check availability, trademarks or meanings, so every result is an idea until you test it. I'd rather tell you that than promise something I can't check.

How to choose a name that lasts

  1. Say it out loud. If it trips your tongue, it will trip your friends too.
  2. Keep it short. Most apps cut off long names, and short ones are easier to remember.
  3. Match the place. Warm and simple suits friends, a sharper sound suits games.
  4. Check it where it matters. Search the app, the game or the domain before you get attached.
  5. Sleep on it for a few days. If you still like it, it's probably right.

Private by design

I don't ask for an account, and I never receive the names you type. Saved and recently copied names live in your browser only. You can read the details in my privacy policy and cookies policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a nickname finder?

A nickname finder takes a name, a word or an interest and gives you short, personal alternatives, such as pet names, short forms, gamer handles and stylish variants. Mine runs in your browser and sorts the easiest names to say first.

How do I choose a good nickname?

I look at sound, length and fit. A good nickname is easy to say, short enough to type and right for the place you'll use it. Read the shortlist out loud before you pick.

Are the names unique or available?

They are ideas, not claims. I don't check whether a name, handle or domain is taken, so test each one in the app or registrar you plan to use.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It's free and there's no sign-up. Every tool runs in your browser.

Do you store the names I type?

No. I never receive what you type. If you tap Save or Copy, the name stays in your browser's local storage on your device, and you can clear it any time.

How do you rank the results?

I give each result a quick quality label based on length and how easy it is to say, then sort the best first. It's a guide, so trust your own ear.

Can I use these names for games, social media or a business?

Yes, but check the rules and availability first. Games and apps limit length and characters, and a business name needs a trademark and domain check.
