To find a nickname, start with something real, like your name, a trait or a shared joke. Shorten it or twist it, say it out loud, and keep the one that is short, easy to say and right for the place you will use it. My Nickname Finder does the first two steps in seconds.

What makes a nickname work?

I judge every nickname with three quick checks. They are the same checks behind the small labels you see next to my tool results, such as Easy to say or Tricky.

Where nicknames come from

Almost every nickname comes from one of five sources. Knowing the source helps you decide what to type into a tool. The examples below are hand-written, not live results.

7 steps to a nickname you will keep

  1. Collect your raw material. Write down your name, its short forms, a hobby and one trait.
  2. Run it through the finder. Type your name into the Nickname Finder and pick a style: cool, cute, funny, gaming, stylish or fantasy.
  3. Narrow the list. Use Length and Starts with to cut it down, then press Remix on any result you like.
  4. Say it out loud. If you trip over it, your friends will too.
  5. Ask one person you trust. A fresh ear catches problems you can't hear anymore.
  6. Check where you will use it. For an app handle, try my username generator and test the result in the app.
  7. Sleep on it. If you still like it in a few days, it is probably right.

Match the nickname to the place

Five mistakes I would avoid

  • Choosing a name that is too long to type on a phone.
  • Tying it to a phase you may outgrow.
  • Using a spelling people have to ask about.
  • Skipping a check of what the word means in other languages.
  • Copying a famous handle too closely.

A note on availability. I do not check whether a nickname or handle is taken. Test each one in the app or game where you plan to use it.

Questions people ask

How do I find a nickname for myself?

Start from your name, a trait or a hobby. Generate a list, say the shortlist out loud and pick the one that is short and fits the place you will use it.

What makes a good nickname?

It is easy to say, short enough to type and fits the setting. I give each result a quick label so you can spot those at a glance.

Can I use a nickname as a username?

Yes, but check that it is free in the app first, and avoid details that point to your real identity.

Are generated nicknames unique?

They are ideas, not guarantees. Many people may already use the same word, so test it before you commit.
